You need to be 17 to start learning to drive and have a valid provisional driving licence before getting behind the driving wheel for your first driving lesson. Collect and complete a D1 form from the Post Office and send it to the DVLA along with your passport or birth certificate, a passport size photo and the relevant fee.

You can currently apply for a provisional licence 3 months before your 17th birthday.

You will be asked to produce your licence on your first lesson, to ensure that you are legal to drive.

Lessons - How many will I need?

This depends upon your ability and willingness to learn however the current average is about 45 hours of professional tuition DSA (Driving Standards Agency, 2006) with 22 hours of private practice.

We have found that two hours lessons are the most practical and can help you learn faster.
