Getting Started
You need to be 17 to start learning to drive and have a valid provisional
driving licence before getting behind the driving wheel for your first
driving lesson. Collect and complete a D1 form from the Post Office
and send it to the DVLA along with your passport or birth certificate,
a passport size photo and the relevant fee.
You can currently apply
for a provisional licence 3 months before your 17th birthday.
You will be asked to produce your licence on your first lesson,
to ensure that you are legal to drive.
Lessons - How many will I need?
This depends upon your ability and willingness to learn however the current
average is about 45 hours of professional tuition DSA (Driving Standards
Agency, 2006) with 22 hours of private practice.
We have found that two hours lessons are
the most practical and can help you learn faster.
Make sure you pick a fully
qualified instructor – ask to see their
green badge.
Your instructor should follow the DSA syllabus.
Don’t take breaks – make sure you have regular lessons.
Ensure you have one-to-one tuition with no pick ups on route.
